We tell ourselves, “I’ll be happy when…” and fill in the blank. But what if the point of a goal wasn’t the finish line, but the feeling you get while walking the path? What if your goals could be a source of inspiration, not intimidation?
Soulful Intentions Over Rigid Resolutions
Traditional goal-setting is broken. It focuses on external achievements and often ignores the most important question: How do I want to feel?
At TFF Health and Wellness, we believe in setting soulful intentions, not rigid resolutions. A resolution says, “I must exercise for 60 minutes, 5 days a week.” A soulful intention asks, “How can I move my body in a way that brings me joy and energy today?
This approach connects to a more meaningful life because it aligns your actions with your core values. It shifts the focus from what you should do to who you want to be. When your goals feel good, they become a form of self-compassion, not self-punishment. They pull you forward with excitement rather than pushing you from behind with guilt.

- Think about the last goal you set for yourself. Did it feel expansive and exciting, or heavy and obligatory?
- When you think about the future, what feeling are you truly chasing? Is it peace? Vitality? Connection?
- Do your current “shoulds” align with that feeling? Or are they taking you further away from it?
- What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? What would you pursue just for the love of it?
Understanding your past patterns is the first step toward creating a new, more compassionate approach to personal growth.
Goals That Nurture You
Creating goals that feel good is a practice. It’s about tuning into your own needs and desires, not adopting someone else’s.
- Start with a Feeling, Not a Number. Before you set a goal, identify the feeling you want to cultivate. Instead of “I need to lose 10 pounds,” try “I want to feel strong and energetic in my body.” This opens you up to many paths—taking walks, dancing in the kitchen, or getting more sleep—that all lead to that feeling.
- Trade “All or Nothing” for “Something is Better Than Nothing.” This is a core CBT principle to combat perfectionism. Did you plan to walk for 30 minutes but only have time for 10? A 10-minute walk is infinitely better than no walk at all. Celebrate the small win instead of focusing on what you didn’t do.
- Create “Process Goals,” Not Just “Outcome Goals.” An outcome goal is “run a 5k.” A process goal is “put on my running shoes three times this week.” You have complete control over the process, which builds confidence and momentum. The outcome will follow.
Connection to the Bigger Picture
