Regular smoking also puts extra stress on vital organs like the lungs, compromising their ability to filter out harmful bacteria and other germs.

The Immune System As We Age

As we age, our immune system becomes weaker and less effective, making it more difficult to fight off infectious diseases.

Numerous studies have found that the elderly are more prone to infectious diseases as compared to younger people, and even more so, they have a higher mortality rate when it comes to such ailments.

Although the exact reason for this is unknown, many scientists link the decrease in defense against these diseases with the diminished number of T cells produced from a smaller thymus.

This means an older individual’s immune system has much less capacity to fight infection than a younger person’s.
